November 2006

Martin recently went to the jungles to the west of the Andes towards the Pacific coast. He visited several communities about a days travel up the Cayapas River. Here is a view of our canoe laden with equipment for working on water projects.

The only means of transport is in narrow dugout canoe with an outboard motor on the back.

Landing in San Jose where the task was to complete a water project that had begun about a year earlier.

Many of the communities on the lower reaches of the Cayapas are of African descent.

One of the jobs for the week was to install around 70 tapstands with water meters. Whilst the technicians did this Martin and an Ecuadorian colleague called Cesar went much further up river to meet the Chachi Indians to discuss their requests for assistance with improving their water supplies.
